What We Cover

Gastroenteritis and food poisoning

Assessment of hydration, anti-nausea medication and oral rehydration advice, with stool tests where symptoms are severe, prolonged or follow travel.

Reflux and indigestion

Heartburn, bloating and upper abdominal discomfort — a structured trial of treatment, Helicobacter pylori testing where indicated and lifestyle measures.

Constipation and irritable bowel

Diet and fluid review, laxative selection and symptom-based management, with referral when features do not fit a benign pattern.

Abdominal pain

Examination to identify causes that need urgent care, such as appendicitis or gallbladder disease, and referral for imaging or endoscopy when indicated.

Warning signs

Blood in the stool or vomit, severe or persistent pain, repeated vomiting, unintended weight loss or a change in bowel habit over the age of 50 are assessed promptly and referred where needed.

Common Questions About Gastro-intestinal Illness

Seek assessment if you cannot keep fluids down, if there is blood in the stool or vomit, if pain is severe or localised, if there is high fever, or if symptoms last beyond a few days. Dehydration develops faster in young children and older adults.
